Have you ever heard of gingivitis before? Gingivitis is a condition that typically arises as gum disease progresses within your mouth. Gum disease, also referred to as periodontal disease, is a highly progressive oral health condition in which your gum tissues are infected. Infections can spread and tooth loss can occur. To help prevent the rise of gingivitis, look for visual clues and other symptoms that are often associated with it.

If you are suffering from gingivitis, it often produces bleeding gums or frequent bad breath. If you routinely suffer from bad breath even though it is treated, it could be linked to an underlying condition such as gingivitis. Furthermore, the presence of swelling, tenderness, or dry mouth can all produce symptoms of gingivitis.

To lower your risk of gingivitis, it is important to make sure your oral hygiene routines are properly taken care of. If you fail to brush and floss on a daily basis, you could put yourself at an increased risk of gum disease. Furthermore, early symptoms of gum disease are often at a higher risk due to a pregnancy, unavoidable genetic predispositions and various dietary choices you may have. In addition, be aware that medications can often lead to dry mouth and gum disease.

The time is now to upgrade your smile with gingivitis prevention and care from Dr. John Poulos and our team at our dental office in Northport, New York. Northport Prosthodontics wants your smile to stay free of gum tissue infection, so call us at 631-262-0644 to book an appointment.

– Do you visit your dentist a lot? If you are not visiting your dentist for routine checkups and examinations, you could be increasing your risk for oral health conditions such as bad breath. If bad breath is present, visit your dentist for treatments.
– Did you know that bad breath could be the result of food and drinks you are eating and drinking? It’s true!
– Bad habits and unhealthy lifestyle choices including smoking or chewing tobacco are known risk factors for bad breath.
– If you have dentures, make sure to always clean them every day to lower your risk of bacteria build-up that can cling to them.
– Don’t forget to clean your tongue routinely, as it can often harbor bacteria that produce bad breath.

Daily brushing and flossing are key to a healthy, vibrant smile. Specifically, the American Dental Association advises brushing twice a day and flossing once a day to get rid of plaque and oral debris. If you practice this recommended routine, along with bi-annual dental cleanings, you will be doing everything in your power to preempt gum disease and tooth decay.

Nowadays flossing is easier than ever. You aren’t limited to just dental wax or dental tape. Your local supermarket or drugstore offers interdental flossing choices such as dental picks, pre-threaded flossers, tiny brushes, oral irrigators, and wooden plaque removers.

We recommend that you experiment until you find a method that is convenient, easy, and therefore enjoyable to use. Don’t forget to choose products carrying the American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance on the packaging, as this ensures that they have been rigorously tested and found to be safe and effective.

So, when should you floss? It’s up to you; just make sure to do it daily for best results. It doesn’t matter whether you floss at bedtime, first thing in the morning, or in the middle of the day after lunch. As long as you are cleaning those areas between the teeth, your teeth and gums will benefit. Also, you can opt to floss before or after you brush your pearly whites. Just be sure to do it!

To keep cavities and gingivitis away from your smile, floss once a day and your smile will thank you. For more information about flossing, or to address any oral health concerns you may have, our prosthodontists, Dr. John Poulos and Dr. Jaime Poulos are happy to help. Please call Northport Prosthodontics in Northport, New York, at 631-262-0644 today!

Gum disease is more common than most people realize. Studies by the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) say that nearly 50% of people over 30 have mild to severe periodontitis–which is the medical term for gum disease.

Periodontal disease ranges in severity from gingivitis (bleeding, inflamed gums) to periodontitis or full-blown gum disease. At this latter stage, tooth loss is a potential risk. Most people think that bleeding gums are not a big deal. They would be wrong. It should not be a normal occurrence. If your gums bleed when brushing or flossing that is a harbinger of infection and gum irritation due to bacteria.

The only way to fight periodontal disease is to keep up a healthy oral cleaning routine starting with 2x daily brushing and 1x daily flossing. Then keeping regular check-ups with professional teeth cleanings.

Hygienists give proper cleanings involving scraping calcified bacteria build up (tartar) off of your teeth. Tartar is an irritant that usually forms along the gum line. This is why dentists will tell you to brush at a 45-degree angle to get along the gum line.

We will also determine your overall gum health by measuring the area where your gum meets your teeth. If there is a space where the root is showing a particular amount you will be diagnosed with periodontal disease.

If you want more information about gum disease, Dr. John Poulos would be happy to help you. Please contact Northport Prosthodontics to make an appointment at: 631-262-0644, or come by our office in Northport, New York.

Daily inconsistencies in your oral hygiene routine can allow hardened tartar to build up on your teeth near the gumline. As it continues to occur the constant bacterial presence near your gums can promote gum disease complications.

This is even more likely to happen if you have a bad habit of putting off your routine dental checkup at Dr. John Poulos’s dental office.

The earliest stage of gum disease, which is known as gingivitis, can cause your gums to bleed easily, look inflamed and cause chronic bad breath problems. If you continue to procrastinate treatment with Dr. John Poulos, gingivitis can develop into a more serious periodontal health problem.

As the inflammation worsens your periodontal tissues can gradually start to pull back from the bases of your teeth. This can cause an infection to build up near the roots of your teeth. In time the condition of periodontitis can start to weaken the roots of your teeth. In time it could even cause a loss of bone structure in the underlying tissues.

Treating this level of periodontal infection can require oral surgery like a gingival flap treatment, gingival resection, or a gum graft to remediate the infected materials and prevent tooth loss.

If you are in the Northport, New York, area and you have periodontal disease concerns, you should call 631-262-0644 to schedule an appointment with Dr. John Poulos or one of the oral care specialists at Northport Prosthodontics.
